National Day of Unplugging

LIVING LIFE UNPLUGGED

Do you ever feel as if your phone or tablet is glued to your hand 24/7? Or that technology is invading your life...often as an unwanted guest?

I know I sometimes feel as if I need to take a break with my phone or tablet. Both are constantly by my side. And while I use them for many purposes, work included, I feel as though I need a breather from the constant distraction and stimulation of such devices.

Did you know that March 9th is the National Day of Unplugging? This day is a day to disconnect, and possibly reconnect with people and activities that might be otherwise discouraged by technology.  One day of disconnecting may not be enough for most of us, but it's a starting spot for reflecting as to why a device doesn't always have to be so readily nearby.

IDEAS for UNPLUGGING

So, what can you do if you have a day unplugged?  Here's a list of ideas to do with your time if you need inspiration:

*Build something new or fix something that's broken

*Plant a flower, start a garden, or put together a terrarium (these are SO cool) https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/make-a-terrarium/

*Go hiking, fishing, or exploring a trail. The Missouri Department of Conservation has a great Website that lists all of the beautiful places you can visit in our state:  https://mdc.mo.gov/

*Visit your local library and pick up some books on your To Read List

*Play a board game or card game with friends

*Doodle, sketch, draw, or journal

*Write an old-fashioned letter AND actually mail it

*Learn or practice a new skill/sport:   shoot some hoops, kick around a soccer ball, fly a kite

*Use a real camera and practice the art of taking nature photos (or pictures of friends and family)

*Take a nap, rest, relax, meditate

Whatever you decide to do, try unplugging every now and again. I know it's now a goal of mine as well.

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you." ~Anne Lamott

Teen Reading: Finding Your Way Back to Adventure

Are you a teen that used to read, but over time, have drifted away from it? As a high school librarian, I hear it a lot. Many of my readers express that they used to read "all the time," but due to homework, work, and social events, their moments of reading for pleasure are far and few between. In fact, "In recent years, less than 20 percent of U.S. teens report reading a book for pleasure" ("Teens Reading"). It is notable that many teens wish to read, but are not sure how to fit in to their schedule, or where to start to jump start the routine again. If that is the case, here are few tips that may help you find your way back to the benefits of reading for fun. 1). Think back to the books you enjoyed as a child. What type of books lured you in? Action adventure? Comics? Fact books? Let your librarian know you previous favorites, and we can start from there. You can also use GoodReads or Amazon--just type in the book you loved and new recommendation

Student Guest Post: Lost in the Library

Books have the ability to take us to a different place. With enough imagination your mind can take you anywhere. We are lucky to have such a great place to be able to read and get lost in a book. Everyone has the ability to get lost, you just have to find the right book. Some books that I enjoyed most: Until Friday Night : Series that tells about the love story between two unthinkable lovers. A football player and a normal girl find themselves facing the hardest moments of their life together. Somehow they manage to find peace in their crazy worlds together. Book two and book three follow the love stories of their friends who also struggle to find their true loves. The Naturals : Also a series of four books about teenagers who have insane abilities. They are natural profilers who look at crime suspect’s emotions, background, crime scenes, and even a human lie detector. The four books follow their crazy lives that are far from normal. One of Us Is Lying :
