Get ready for the coolest month of the year because...
April is School Library Month!
This month we will be talking about, celebrating, and sharing the all the valuable things that the library offers its patrons, both students and teachers alike.
First and probably most obvious, librarians work really had to have the BEST books available. We take recommendations from our patrons, and read countless book reviews, book lists, and literary news reports. We follow authors (they're our celebrities), and keep track of new books in all the series. We make our own lists based on the needs of our school. And we take the responsibility of purchasing supplies and materials for the space very seriously. We also have to keep up on our own reading in order to recommend books!
We are usually technology gurus (or at least attempt to be). We help with log-in issues, printing snafus, Website/software navigation and Google know-how. Sometimes we are copy machine and laminator experts. Paper jams avoid Librarians like the plague. (Jams always happen when we're not around). We are also often in charge of school Websites, blogs, and social media. Social Media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter are great vehicles for sharing/practicing Digital Citizenship and school community happenings.
Libraries are places to explore, and librarians are the tour guides. We have spaces called Makerspaces--with materials to imagine, create, build, and challenge. These might include, but are not limited to, coding robots, building supplies for mazes, puzzles, and/or structures. We also have stations to create your own bookmark, express your thoughts through poetry, and/or just color and draw.
Libraries contain answers, and hopefully Librarians are facilitators for answers. Libraries/Librarians can provide educational support for teachers and students. We can locate great Websites, books, apps, and software that will assist most learning minds.
Librarians are also often facilitators for extra lessons within the classroom, and for teachers themselves in a professional development capacity.
Sometimes, libraries and librarians are discounted. In reality, most library spaces are BUSY, multi-tasking, and important in the chain of a school's daily and long term success. Studies continuously point to the fact that schools with a full time librarian have higher test scores results and general student success.
Come visit us today to see what great things we are doing--and to participate in the current contest of building your own Spine Label poem!
